standard Microsoft Adds China Specific Features to Cortana, Including “China Watch”, Lottery, Celebrities and More

DSC05454Although Cortana (beta) is officially only available for US located users; that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from adding some features specific to China based users. The new features added include:

  • Daily Routine: Beijing driving curbs schedule.
  • Celebrity: celebrities news and social activities which is provided by Bing Score, a rank service developed by Bing China.
  • China Watch: public holidays schedule, Bing Dictionary “Word of the Day” and theBeijing Movie Festival schedule.
  • Lottery: lottery drawing date and results.
  • Movies and TV: top movies and TV in some categories from Youku.
  • Weather: temperature in Celsius and air pollution index.

windows-phone-8-1-cortana-china-livesino-600x354The region specific features are really cool, especially the ability to view weather updates in Celsius currently I have to ask Cortana every-time to switch my units to Celsius). Users located in China won’t have to do anything from their end, as Cortana will detect the origin of the ip Address and adjust accordingly. Still pretty cool though.

Thanks for the tip Alvester

What does it base the decision for Farenheit/Celsius on?
I ma based in Germany but have set region to US, but would obviously also like to see it in Celsius!

I think it is kind of sad that the Speech/Phone language is not sufficient for making Cortana work, my english seems to be just fine for Cortana, why require the region change?

    • I’m pretty sure Microsoft will work on that soon (given the changes for China); currently Cortana follows the US defaults = Fahrenheit (I’d love Celsius too)
