standard Microsoft Discontinuing “Rooms” for Windows Phone Next Month

samsung-unveils-first-windows-phone-8-smartphone-2f10fbf9d2Microsoft have just started sending out emails to Windows Phone users alerting them that Rooms chat will no longer be supported come March 2015. Rooms were first introduced in WIndows Phone 8 as a way for families and friends to chat with each other, allowing them to share calendars, photos and notes (stored on OneNote).

However since their introduction in Windows Phone 8, Rooms haven’t improved much, nor have they become as popular as Microsoft hoped.

For users on Windows Phone 8/8.1 the rooms will still be accessible to view previous messages, photos and calendars; however new rooms can’t be created. Users on Windows 10 technical preview however will not have access to Rooms at all, including pre-existing ones.

Starting in March 2015, Rooms on Windows Phone will no longer be supported. You’ll still be able to view and use your room photo albums, calendars, and notes.

The changes to Rooms will take place in two stages.

In Windows Phone 8 and 8.1

After support for Rooms ends in March 2015, you’ll still see your existing rooms on your Windows Phone 8 or 8.1. You’ll be able to view and use your room photo albums, calendars, and notes on your phone. But you won’t be able to create new rooms or make membership or permissions changes to existing rooms. Additionally, you and other room members won’t be able to send any new room chat messages.

In Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones

We’re making way for new features in Windows 10 that will help you stay in touch with the people that matter most. Once you update to Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, rooms will no longer show up on your phone. You’ll still be able to get to your photo albums, calendars, and notes, either on the Web or by using other apps on your phone. You won’t be able to see your chat history or send or receive any new chats.

They better have something pretty killer to take its place, or this is just yet another unique (and handy) feature with lots of potential flushed down the drain.

Offer the same functionality as an App or something.

Rooms was one of the first things I noticed that was “cool” about my new WP.
Very useful to me and wife, her and kids, etc.
Is this one less reason to stay with WP
Chase bank has abandoned the platform as well.
