In some surprising news, Whatsapp the popular cross-platform messaging service has announced that they will be ending service on a number of older platforms, making the messaging service unavailable to these devices. The discontinuation of the service on these older platforms is certainly going to affect many of the poorer regions where older S40 (Asha and other phones) devices are still widely popular.
Of the platforms Whatsapp will cease to support, all are mostly dead (development wise) except for BB10 which BlackBerry are still keeping around for a while, on the other hand older Windows Phone 7 devices such as the Lumia 800 an 900 which are still being sold in some markets will also lose support.
The full list of devices that will lose support are:
- Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
- Blackberry OS 7 and earlier
- Blackberry 10
- Nokia S40
- Nokia Symbian S60
- Windows Phone 7.1
