Twitter just rolled a new set of enhancements targeting the Direct Messaging feature in their app, the new enhancements bring the private messaging part of the platform out of the dark ages and give them a breath of fresh air.
Features added to DM’s include:
- Seen notifications/checkmarks- when a message is read by the recipient the checkmark will turn blue, and it doesn’t look like there’s a way to turn this feature off.
- Typing alerts- When whoever you’re messaging is typing you’ll get a little bubble head, letting you know they’re about to respond.
- Web link previews
- Group DM’s

The set of new features certainly take the DM part of Twitter form being just a “messaging” platform and make it more of an “instant messaging” platform, where in the past I felt it was akin to email. A quick spin of the new feature’s with the lovely Hazel from ITB News showed the platform was pretty much on par with iMessaging or any other mainstream chat service.
Currently these features are only available on the Android and iOS apps, it’s unclear when they’ll make their way to the desktop platform, if at all; but for now upgrade to the latest version to check them out.
